About This Image
Photo mounted on vintage board depicting a group photo of 14 Civil War Union officers. Found in Massachusetts. Every officer present wears shoulder straps; a couple sport badges; and at least four brought swords to the portrait sitting. The image is probably circa 1890s made from an original negative, as the view is very sharp. A previous owner has identified on the back in contemporary pencil three of the sitters (Major Robert H. Stevenson - 24th reg. Mass Vol;------ Francis W. Palfrey -Lt. Col. 20th Mass Vol.;-------Major Henry Lee Higginson, 1st Mass Cavalry) along with some basic enlistment/battle details and a note that the image occurred after April 1864 (all three of the previous owner's notes confirm Massachusetts connections). It has also been suggested that the fourth man in the front center row from the left could be Charles Jackson Paine associated with recruiting the 22nd Mass. Infantry. Exterior dimensions of mount board are about 16-5/8" X 13-3/4". The rubber stamp on back identifies photographer and reads: "H. G. Smith, Photographer, 116 Tremont St., Boston, Mass."
