Gelles says, "Good photos should teach you something…a new way of seeing the world. Having long been caught in the nexus of feminism, motherhood, and developing as an artist, I have undertaken a determined and obsessive exploration on these issues, providing social commentary on who we are and how we think in this socially organized world."
Regarding her Fourth Grade Stories, "Over the past ten years Gelles has interviewed and photographed more than 300 fourth grade students from a wide range of economic and cultural backgrounds in China, England, India, Israel, Italy, Nicaragua, St. Lucia, South Africa, South Korea, and multiple areas of the United States. She asked all of the students the same three questions: Who do you live with? What do you wish for? What do you worry about? The Fourth Grade Project connects children locally and globally, building bridges and tearing down walls."

Her work is in collections throughout the US and around the world including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA; Newport Art Museum in Newport, RI; Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, OH; Harvard University Fine Arts Library, Cambridge, MA; and the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Art in Brazil.
