About This Image

Josef Bartuska was born in Czechoslovakia in 1898. A Czech avant-garde artist, Bartuska, was one of the most versatile artists of the inter-war period. He was a poet, photographer, painter, graphic artist, draughtsman, collage artist, columnist, musician, theater director, and even filmmaker. He was a founder of the 'Linie' group in which photography played an important role. Like other avant-garde groups, the "Linie" promoted progress and modernity. What made it different from some other movements of the time was its ultimate stress on beauty. Bartuska's expressed this approach when he said, "I shall use all things beautiful."Bartuska passed away in 1963.
