The images for the book, with the assistance of a small grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, were taken during a five-week period from December 1979 to January 1980. They first appeared in a ten-page layout in "Afterimage" and then in the New York Times and in this first edition by "Aperture". One of the finest photojournalist books ever published.
