| Description: Titled and numbered in ink on label on verso. The earliest surviving images of this area of modern Turkey are by de Prangey. While a bit foggy and lower in contrast than images from other areas of his trip (probably due to water impurities), this image is still stunning in its content. The ancient city of Aphrodisias is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Greek and Roman periods in Turkey. Aphrodisias lies in the Maeander River basin, in a fertile valley 100 miles southeast of the port of Izmir. Famous for its sanctuary of Aphrodite, the city's patron goddess, Aphrodisias enjoyed a long and prosperous existence from the first century B.C. through the sixth century A.D. Today, many of the city's ancient monuments remain standing, and excavations have unearthed numerous fine marble statues and other artifacts. This image may show some of the ancient baths with a man perched on the stones for interest and perspective. Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania and New York buyers must pay appropriate sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges. |
