Known simply as Hatami (his first name has been spelt two ways, Shahrokh and Sharok), he was born in Iran in 1930. He was a correspondent for the Black Star agency and Life published his coverage of the overthrow of democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and the restoration to power of the Shah in 1953. During the 1950s and 60s he worked in Europe and the Middle East with his celebrity, fashion and news photographs published in numerous magazines around the world. Working behind the scenes on the filming of Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby, Hatami was staying at Polanski's Los Angeles house in March 1969, when he encountered Charles Manson whom he promptly sent away. Manson returned in August and murdered Sharon Tate and four other house guests.
