Description:

An artistic image of the Italian peasants known as Pifferari. This may be the first positive print found of this photographer's work, who has only been known through glass plate negatives. Lepetit's work is very rare, because he was actually a painter and caricaturist, but he took photographs to use in his work. According to J-M Voignier, he was apparently well respected by his fellow artists, and he was often at the center of controversy because his socially inspired caricatures were often published in the illustrated newspapers of the time. He was born in Aumale, a town of northern France on the left bank of the Bresle River. He photographed and painted there in the 1860s. He died in 1909 in Levallois Perret. See: Catalogue Raisonne of the photographic work of Alfred Lepetit.
