Description:

This image has the perfect provenance from the photographer directly to the models. With the photographer's red stamp on verso and negative number in pencil. The most famous image from the subway series is this one where Christiane holds in her hands a sprig of lily of the valley (muguet de bois). Lily of the valley is referred to as a "porte-bonheur"--literally, "bringer of happiness", or perhaps what we would call a good luck charm. It is sold around May day in France. Marc looks pensively to her. See: Doisneau, Mes Parisiens, pl.11; Hamilton, Robert Doisneau: A Photographer's Life, pl.350; Pultz, The Body and Lens: Photography 1839 to Present, pl.66. Provenance: Photographer to Models, Marc and Christiane Chevalier. Comes with a letter of provenance from Marc Chevalier.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
