Description:

With photographer's stamp on verso. He was born in 1909 in Bloomington, Illinois, and studied at Illinois State University and the Art Institute of Chicago before obtaining his BS degree at Ohio State in 1933. He then worked as a freelance photographer in Chicago before taking a job making portraits at the Marshall Fields studio there. In 1937, when Gyorgy Kepes wanted a photography instructor and lab manager for the course at the New Bauhaus School, he picked Smith for the job, but the course closed the following year. From 1940-42 he was an associate editor for the magazine 'Minicam Photography'. He became an instructor in photography at Indiana University in 1947, and a professor there from 1965-77. He died in 1986.
