The photography studio's stamp is on the verso of the photograph and it is also signed in black ink on the recto. A very good image and print, probably from the mid-1950s. The Gay-Couttet studio was founded about 1880 in Chamonix in the French Alps, probably by Adolphe Couttet, who also maintained a studio in nearby Savoy. The studio was active until 1980 and consisted of five generations of photographers. There is a book on the studio's work entitled, "Gay-Couttet Photographes: 1880-1980" published in 2004 by Esope. An exhibition of the studio's equipment and images was on display at the Espace Tairraz, Chamonix in 2005-2006.
