Arthur Tress is one of the greatest living conceptual art photographers. His posed street work of the late 1960s-70s, such as this surrealist image, pre-dates similar work by other contemporary artists who worked in a similar vein, such as Jeff Walls and Gregory Crewdson. In 2001, the Corcoran Gallery of Art featured a retrospective of his work entitled "Arthur Tress: Fantastic Voyage: Photographs 1956-2000" which took an intimate look at his long and varied career. This image is the cover of that book.
