| Description: An unpublished lantern slide taken of the Powell Party during its campaign down the Colorado River. Six men and one Native American sit around a campsite with two other figures blacked out at the right (Powell seated far left). Before them is a blanket laid out with utensils, plates, cups, a pitcher, and canteen arranged on and around it. John Wesley Powell (1834-1902), ethnologist, geologist, and explorer, lead the first geological expedition down the Colorado River in May, 1869. Three months, 900 miles, one mutiny, and many near-disasters later, the party emerged at the mouth of the Grand Canyon. The second expedition was in 1871. Powell's painstaking accounts are among the most accurate and evocative descriptions of the region to date. A very important image, perhaps used by Powell or one of his party at speaking engagements. See: http://www.nps.gov/grca/photos/powell/pages/14765.htm for a similar image. Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer.
