Description: The title and the following information are on the title page: [Photographed by Col. Biggs and Major Loch. With an Historical Sketch by Col. Meadows Taylor, and an Architectural Essay by James Fergusson. London: John Murray, 1866]. The price listed is net. Images are mostly in fine condition with rich tones, with a few lighter in tone. Some foxing on pages, not affecting the photographs. Original binding has been restored professionally. This book is an extraordinary rarity in 19th-century Indian photography, especially with its images in generally fine condition as it is here. Only one other copy has ever come on the market nearly 20 years ago, and it was not in nearly as fine a condition as this one. The book is one of a series of three on the architecture of Beejapoor, Dharwar and Ahmadabad published in 1866 by the Committee of Architectural Antiquities of Western India. The volumes are desirable especially for their original photographs, and the volumes on Beejapoor and Dharwar are the more desirable of the three. A copy of the Dharwar volume sold over two years ago for over $31,000 at auction. In this volume offered here there are 77 tipped-in albumen print illustrations in all. Thirty-one of these are photographs of actual scenes from life, and 46 are photographic copies of detailed architectural drawings of what the original ruins must have looked like. The book measures 22.25 inches x 15.25 inches x 2.25 inches. The photographs vary in size from 10" x 14" to 9.25" x 14.25" to 9.75" x 15.5". Pages 1-83 are written by Colonel Meadows Taylor, describing the Dynasties, their rulers etc. and include a map of the regions. Pages 85-93 are historical descriptions of the buildings written by James Fergusson and include small (2.5" x 2.5") woodcuts as illustrations of the designs and layouts. Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania and New York buyers must pay appropriate sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
