About This Image
The style of the image resembles those taken by Kassian Cephas and his son Sem in Borobudur in 1890: photos taken from the temple’s upper terrace with the landscape in the background. However the writing on most Cephas images is somewhat different than this one. Sem helped his father to photograph Borobodur, and it is likely this image was taken by him.Kassian Cephas retired in 1904 and died in 1911. Sem died in an accident in 1918. That was the end of the family photographic business. The old writing for Borobudur was Boroboedoer in one word, or sometimes in two words like on the back of this image's mount. My thanks to Pascale Jacquemin for her help with this information.
