49 photographs comprising 20 salted or albumenized salt paper prints, average size 11 x 9 cm, and 29 early albumen prints, averaging 16 x 12 cm, all loosely inserted in 19th-century blue cloth-bound album with blank leaves of wove paper, no watermark visible, some later pencil captions to mounts and back of images, album lacking backstrip, lower cover detached.
Early Scottish portrait photographs including many members of the Royal Scottish Academy: Sir George Harvey (1806-1876), Horatio McCulloch (1806-1867), John Syme (1795-1861), Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882), Gourlay Steell (1819-1894), Samuel Bough (1822-1878), Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896), ?James Drummond (1816-1877), and a photograph of John Graham Gilbert\'s 1854 portrait of Sir John Watson Gordon (1788-1864); together with portraits of the physician Sir Robert Christison (1797-1882), the geographer and cartographer Alexander Keith Johnson (1804-1871), and minister Rev. Dr Patrick Clason (1789-1867), and other unidentified portraits of men, women and children.
Provenance: Formerly owned by the Late Murray Mackinnon, a renowned collector of photography documenting Scottish life from the mid-19th to early-20th century; Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, 19th June 2019; Sotheby\'s London, 25 April, 1986 Photographs sale.
James Good Tunny was born in Edinburgh on 8 April 1820. His parents were Neil Tunny, an Irish immigrant and Catherine Tunny (nee Good).
His father was a shoemaker and Tunny followed him in this career until around 1852 when he opened his first photography studio at 78 South Clerk Street. Tunny’s work began to appear in exhibitions soon after his first studio opened, including the Photographic Society of Scotland from 1856-1864 and the Photographic Society, London in 1874 and 1875.
