Cabinet card from the Haynes series "Colored Cabinets of Noted Indians." This collection includes 11 colored cabinet cards that were part of a series called "Colored Cabinets of Noted Indians" published by F. Jay Haynes and Brothers in St. Paul, Minnesota around 1889. The photographs include images of Apsáalooke (Crow/Absaroke), Hunkpapa Lakota (Hunkpapa Sioux) and Niimíipuu (Nez Perce) leaders.
Jessie Iron Bull (also known as Jesse Iron Bull), a member of the Apsáalooke (Crow) nation, taken around 1880-1883 by photographer Frank Jay Haynes. Jessie Iron Bull was a known badé (or bate), a Crow term for a person assigned male at birth who takes on the social and ceremonial role of a woman. Jessie has on a plaid dress and jewelry. Another copy of this image is in the National Museum of the American Indian. A later copy on a tobacco card is in the collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
