About This Image
Signed and titled in ink in margin recto. The Heart of Baltimore … One of the glories of Baltimore - “Queen City of the Chesapeake” - is Mount Vernon Place which nestles quietly in the heart of the metropolis. The Doric column was the first monument started in honor of George Washington, but was not the first one completed. That honor goes to the stone tower near Boonsboro, Maryland. The cornerstone of the Baltimore monument was laid on July 4, 1815, but the monument was not completed until 1829. The statue of Washington faces the bustling harbor where ships from all over the world have docked since the middle of the eighteenth century.Aubrey Bodine was born in Baltimore on July 21, 1906, the second of four children. The former photographic director of the Sunday Baltimore Sun Magazine, recorded his state of Maryland for 50 years, from 1920 until his death in 1970.A 2,500-word article on his career, prepared in 1946 under his direction, spanned his birth to employment in one ambiguous sentence: "Bodine went to work for the "Baltimore Sun" (circulation 300,000) right after leaving St. Paul's Episcopal School."He was awarded fellowships by both the Photographic Society of America and the National Press Photographers Association, making history as the first photographer to be so honored by his peers. The Baltimore pictorialist won over a thousand awards in national and international salon competitions.Between 1952 and 1970, with Stanley L. Cahn's assistance, Bodine published four books, "My Maryland", "Chesapeake Bay and Tidewater", "Face of Maryland", "Face of Virginia", and "Guide to Baltimore and Annapolis". Recently a new comprehensive book on Bodine's career has been published by Tidewater Publishers, entitled "Bodine's Chesapeake Bay Country". A major exhibition of original A. Aubrey Bodine photographs was featured in 2006 at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
