Photographer's stamp on recto of mount at bottom right of photograph.Baron Nau de Champlouis (March 30, 1833, Chantemerle in Essonnes, France--September 3, 1878) learned and practiced photography by around 1857, using the wax paper negative process. He took scarce views in Syria, Lebanon and Algeria.By 1859 he had achieved the rank of captain and was aide-de-camp to General de Ladmirault. He participated in the Battle of Melegnano, Italy, when on June 8, 1859 he was shot in the face, but recovered. On June 20th he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor for his bravery. He was a part of the French expedition to Syria in 1860-61. He wrote and published a book "Views of Lebanon and Damascus taken during that French military expedition". He will return with many photos which he will exhibit at the SFP in 1862. He exhibited some of his photographs at the 1863 London World's Fair. He also published pictures of Algeria, alongside Captain Piboul, during the universal exhibition of 1867. He is known particularly for a map of Africa under the domination of the Romans, which was published in 1864. He took part in the French campaign in Algeria between 1865 and 1866. In 1870, he served at the headquarters of Paris in the General Staff of General Trochu. Secretary of the Geographical Society, in March 4, 1870 he sponsored Captain Edouard Désiré Dewulff, then commander of the Biskra circle, to be one of the members of the Geographical Society.He later married Marie Caroline Eve d'Urse in Brussels on October 21, 1872.
