About This Image
Signed and titled "Les remparts a Avignon" by photographer in the negative. "Avignon: les Remparts" is written in ink on recto of mount. The word "ancien" (or old) and a date Nov 2, 75 is written in ink in another hand. The seven is a bit strange on the date, so probably a misshapen 5.This print shows the ramparts outside the walled medieval city of Avignon during the 1856 flood. The mirror-like surface of the water. In 1858 the government reminded Baldus that it owned the flood pictures. He reassigned the numbers to his New Louvre series, making this print a rare exception.See: Daniel, Photographs of Edouard Baldus, pl.52; Brettell, Paper and Light, pl.63; Gernsheim, Origins of Photography, pl.181; Rosenblum, A World History of Photography, pl.104; Mondenard, Photographier l'Architecture: 1851-1920, p.122; Christ, L'Age d'or de la Photographie, pl.74.
