About This Image

Image has curved corners with the title and photographer's credits on the mount. Image is slightly too big for scanner and so sky was cropped. Rumine was a Russian nobleman who accompanied Grand Duke Constantine, son of Nicholas I, on his voyage around the Mediterranean in 1858-59 and made photographs on the trip, which included images of Nice, Athens, Jerusalem, Naples and Pompei. He also had a studio in Paris. Besides his large format work, he also produced stereos and participated in the SFP's 1859 exposition. His work is very rare and few large pieces exist, even in institutions.
