About This Image

Signed, titled and with Leighton's Bradford location in ink on the verso, along with a 1933 XII Salon International Bruxelles label. The manor house, Stuntney Hall (now a farm-house), which stands on an eminence, was the ancient residence of the Stewards, and afterwards of Oliver Cromwell, who inherited it from them. Several hillocks in the vicinity of the hall are supposed to have been thrown up by the latter, when he was preparing to level his cannon against the cathedral.Born in England, Leighton, who lived and worked in Bradford, U.K., was an active member of the Royal Photographic Society and the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles. He was very active in the salons of the day from about 1915 until his death in 1947. A number of his images were published in the American Annual of Photography in the 1920s and 1936.His work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Museum of American History, Smith College Museum of Art, the Worcester Art Museum, Princeton University and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia. He is listed in the Auer and Auer and George Eastman House databases
