About This Image
Laure Albin Guillot (born Maffredi; 15 February 1879 – 22 February 1962) was a French photographer remarkable for her longevity and the variety of her work.
She attended the Lycée Molière in the 16th arrondissement. In 1897 she married Dr. Albin Guillot, a specialist in microscopy, and worked from a studio in her home on Rue du Ranelagh. Her early fashion photographs were published in the French edition of Vogue, and other genres she covered included celebrity portraits, photomicrography, which she renamed “micrographie”, nudes, landscapes, still lifes, and documentary. She was also active and held leadership positions in several professional and cultural institutions such as a member of the Société des artistes décorateurs, the Société Française de Photographie, director of photographic archives for the Direction générale des Beaux-Arts (forerunner of the Ministry of Culture) and first curator of the Cinémathèque nationale, and president of the Union Féminine des Carrières Libérales. In 1937, she organized the exhibition Femmes artistes d\'Europe.
A 2013 exhibition presented at the Jeu de Paume gathered a significant collection of 200 original prints and books by Laure Albin Guillot, as well as magazines and documents of the period from public and private collections, such as the Parisienne de Photographie, the Musée National d’Art Moderne, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Musée Nicéphore Niépce (Chalon-sur-Saône) and the Musée Français de la Photographie (Bièvres).
