About This Image

This photograph came from a group of Man Rays of the Chateau, where one of those prints was stamped on the verso with Man Ray's 31 bis, RUE CAMPAGNE PREMIERE PARIS XIVe stamp (M6 in Steven Manford's list). This is one of the unstamped vintage photographs. The prints were all on the same paper and same size, and clearly all by Man Ray.In the 1920s an American, Russell Greely, moved into de Clavary with a French aristocrat, François de Gouy d'Arcy. Here they entertained the intelligentsia of the 20th century, including Igor Stravinsky, Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc, Constantin Brâncu?i, Kees van Dongen, Fernand Léger, Man Ray, Francis Picabia, Isadora Duncan, Jean Cocteau, Max Jacob, Paul Valéry, Marie Laurencin, Rebecca West and the like.Designer Emilio Terry worked at de Clavary during this period, where his design for the dining room remains intact. Picasso designed the mosaic stone floor in the foyer. The couple were also friends with Max Ernst and built a studio for him on the property. The Château de Clavary is located near Grasse, France.
