With photographer's credit, the word "Panama" and Fx Blanc & Cie. Ernest Roblin joined the Societe Francaise de Photographie in 1880. Around 1885 he left Paris, after having sold his studio in to a M. Wildor in order to open his own studio in Granville at 102 de la rue Couraye, which he called Photographie Parisienne. He operated the studio until 1890 when he changed the name to la Photographie Maritime Castel-Photo. The two images were taken during the French ill-fated attempt at building a canal through the Isthmus of Panama. Numerous of the men in the photographs are armed, including one pointing a rifle directly at the camera.
