Titled on verso.Colonel Archibald Henry Plantagenet Stuart Wortley (1832-1890) was born in Wortley, Yorkshire.He first took up photography in Africa in 1853 while in the army and began exhibiting portraits and dramatic "instantaneous" seascapes in 1862, the same year he was accepted as a member of Photographic Society of London.From 1874 he marketed his own photographic plates through his Uranium Dry Plate Company. He is recognized as the author of one of a number of "dry" collodion processes in the 1860s and 70s.Stuart-Wortley played a pivotal role in the early history of British photography as an innovator, promoter, and practitioner of the medium. A bronze medal was awarded to Col. H. Stuart Wortley by the Photographic Society of London in 1879.In 1880 he traveled in the South Seas and fell in love with Tahiti; the book "Tahiti: A Series of Photographs" with letterpress by Lady Brassey was illustrated with collotypes from that journey.
